Re: The Bible Vs. Joseph Smith

I might give it a try but I fear that the obvious agenda of the film might stop me from getting very far. I'm very interested in how archaeology supports (and also contradicts) the reality of some people, places, and events in the Bible - in drastic contrast to the BoM - but I can already tell that ...

The important thing is to look to God and live.
And just as importantly, don't fail to live because you're too worried about how God is judging you about things that don't matter.

Re: Forced Turning Point

Wait a minute!!! See, this is what happens when you get really busy elsewhere and don't keep up with NOM threads. One minute one of your friends is out of danger because he hasn't paid tithing for a year and the next he's the freakin' bishop! You know what will make you a great bishop? You d...

The burger challenge at Lucky 13's in Salt Lake City, Utah by Raina Huang: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y_WZirleWpU It takes a lot to make Raina flinch. I know that I could not handle all those roasted habaneros and habanero puree. Mexico could potentially use habaneros as grenades in warfare. W...

Re: More than one way to Marry

Here's an off-the-wall question. Is it possible to get a temple divorce and remain civilly married? Keep the marriage but divorce the third member (the church) from it? You CAN get a civil divorce but remain temple-married. I guess resignation or excommunication would do the same thing but I'm just ...

Re: Garments and Temple recommend interview

Endowed members should seek the guidance of the Holy Spirit to answer personal questions about wearing the garment. This particularly applies to WELL endowed members. Someone who is tuned into to said spirit will recognize the still small voice on hot summer days prompting them to "let the dogs out...

Joseph Smith never dated the first vision. He skipped straight to the marriage proposal.
Proposals, since he had multiple first visions.
He couldn't commit to just one because, you know, angel with sword.

Re: New Apologetic Movie: Witnesses

I think the museum should have an interactive activity for the kids. Have a general authority tell them some stories about his personal visits with an angel. Have him show them a pillow case wrapped around what he claims is a box of gold plates given to him by the angel. Tell them they'll get a trea...

Re: 'Do you think I could ever be happy outside of the church?'

There seemed to be a lot of things done back in those days that kids/people thought were funny at the expense of the unsuspecting. I never cared for that type of "humor". You wouldn't make a good Mason either. That trick is also part of a masonic initiation. Instead of a tree, they make you walk a ...

Re: 'Do you think I could ever be happy outside of the church?'

As fair and equitable as this solution sounds, I doubt anyone in jfro's wife's position would go for it. The problem with it is that the other person is more concerned about what God thinks of them. Surely there will be hell to pay for even thinking you could just take a vacation from the pressure ...

And I believe that the story about the sand in the box is one that apologists say is from an antagonistic source and can't be trusted, which as a believer you go "oh yeah it's an anti-Mormon trying to undercut Joseph Smith" and walk away. I took this picture at the church history museum. This is th...

Re: What do you believe about it now?

I have wondered if the prophets really do believe? I think Nelson actually believes he is very special and that God, though not actually speaking, is giving him impressions. I'm a prophet, so random things that pop into my head MUST therefore be prophesy. I don't think Monson believed anything like...

Re: Dating the First Vision

Hagoth did you listen to Steven Harper's segments with Rick Bennett and Gospel Tangents? I have them downloaded to listen to next time I work, but Dan Vogel picked it apart pretty good on Facebook... Harper works very hard to find anything that could be evidence of an 1820 revival and changes a lot...

Re: Dating the First Vision

In one of Oliver Cowdery's letters to W. W. Phelps he mentions Joseph's age when he first saw the angel, and then in a later letter he corrects himself and states that Joseph told him to backdate the event to a year earlier. Other things, like the timing of the revival sermons also support the idea ...

I am sure that spirit children would not be produced like physical children. We have no concept of what spiri...

Re: New Apologetic Movie: Witnesses

"Because God will kill you (or me)" is a very convenient and all-purpose excuse. Why do you have to marry my teenage daughter? "Because God will kill me if I don't." I think they should keep using it. Why can't I see the churches financial records? "Because God will kill you." "Brother Hagoth, it's ...

Re: New Apologetic Movie: Witnesses

Do you think the 3 witnesses saw anything at all? Or did JS just lead them in a group hypnosis session? I should have said "saw." No I don't think they saw anything, except in a mental/revelatory sense, as Jfro described. Whitmer pretty much admitted that. Think about what they said outside of the ...

Re: New Apologetic Movie: Witnesses

Why didn't they testify of how awesome the magick rock in the hat was? The church never included rock talk as "testimony," even though Whitmer and Harris talked about it quite a bit. It was when Joseph stopped using the rock that Whitmer concluded that he had become a fallen prophet. To the witness...

Even the most accomplished woman remains at ground level.
Which The Priesthood somehow continues to misidentify as a pedestal.
