Re: Where was John the beloved buried? Or was he not buried?

My TBM sister and her husband are traveling in Turkey this week, Ephesus in particular. They visited famous Saint John's Basilica, where legend has it, John the beloved and/or the apostle was buried. Of course TBM's know that John was never buried but was translated, as D&C 7 explains. I've got it!...

Re: Fight The New Drug

For example I had a partner who indulged in porn for a while and later moved on to online dating while we were engaged to be married and eventually decided to try polyamory and swinging at parties all while I stood helplessly by her, supporting her freedom and individual right to choose because of ...

What about polygamy/child brides?
Muslim martyrs get 72 virgins in the next life.

Early Mormon leaders may not have had quite as many, but they were practical enough to take them in this life rather than wait for the promise of an after-death reward.

Re: Mormons and Muslims

Maybe that professor wasn't aware that the BYU Religious Studies Center had published a book on the topic: https://rsc.byu.edu/book/mormons-muslims Here's an except from one of the essays. The Muhammed comparison dates back to Joseph Smith's own day. In 1838 Thomas B. Marsh testified that he had ove...

People toss around the word "addiction" a little haphazardly, especially in the church.
Kind of like "translate," "know," "revelation," "unpaid clergy..."

Re: Love

I think it was your bishop's way of saying, "don't shoot me, I'm only the messenger." My former SP just got back from serving as a mission president in Asia. We met for lunch and his first question to me was, "what happened while I was away? Our ward has become so divided."

My answer: "Trump."

Re: Elder Gong: “Please don’t post that photo…”

But we have discussed in the past how the church doesn’t want sexually active gays to even show up at church, or even their children to attend. Why? Because getting to know a real person who is gay would make gay people into “us” instead of “them”. Yup, that's the nail on the head. Boyd K. Packer w...

“You should never shame anyone, especially for loving your child. Never.” [/quote] Marie has a bigger pair than Gong. Re: Saturday Sabbath

I only have seven days in each week, and Yahweh has all of the days of eternity to do with as he wishes, so I don't think he needs to take away any more of my precious days. Ditto for money. See you in the wilderness, Bonfire.

Re: Fight The New Drug

Bonfire, I'm wondering what is your motivation for bringing this up here. Are you addressing your personal struggle with porn and asking us for support, or are you concerned that the members of the NOM board are in particular need of this message?

Re: Fight The New Drug

I'm not sure you can fight porn. You can educate yourself and your family about it. I remember one anti-porn campaign with lots of videos of guys speaking out against porn and they all had a tone of "I got caught and I'm trying to save my relationship." Some of the videos actually had the wife or gi...

Re: Did anyone else hear voices?

That being said, my rant about dreams (hallucinations) is basically no different than getting a "burning bosom" at church and using that to prove "the church is true" but the "burning bosom" at the Iron Maiden concert is "The Adversary™." I agree that it's important to prioritize possibilitie...

Re: Elder Gong: “Please don’t post that photo…”

Matt certainly upped the ante with this act, but he may just be done. His Dad may have just pushed the wrong button this time. If that's what happened here, I certainly can empathize. The ball is in Gerrit's court. He has three options: strike back, continue to hide his head in shame, or reach out ...

Re: Did anyone else hear voices?

What's the difference between a hallucination and a dream? If you're hearing and seeing stuff that's not there when you're walking around I think that pretty neatly fits the definition of a hallucination. However, there are two kinds - probably the most common - that happen in a sleep state when pe...

Re: Elder Gong: “Please don’t post that photo…”

I would just like to point out that the photo doesn't exactly show Elder Gong giving the thumps-up while watching his son and partner performing a sex act. He is shackled by a culture where you are compelled to be ashamed of even sitting down to have a friendly meal with your own child if there's an...

Re: Did anyone else hear voices?

I attended a leadership meeting the Boyd Packer back in the 1980... and had never heard an audible voice in response to his prayers. So Stuck is a superior revelator to BKP. Good for you, Stuck! I have read that just about everyone will experience hallucinations at some point in their life, particu...

Whoever she marries, if she ever marries.... I'm sure it will be a perfectly happy household. On the outside. Nelson getting married so quick to the likes of Wendy was another thing that just really really rubbed me the wrong way. Idea for a Mormon sitcom: through some kind of comedic mixup Wendy e...

Re: Sealed to the church by shame

I wanted to marry a girl but she found out about the problem and her dad was a former bishop and so that didn't pass muster. Crazy that the church can control the intimate details of people's lives to that degree. Speaking of former bishops, Dehlin mentioned that every former church leader who has ...

Sealed to the church by shame

A recent Mormon Stories a guest, Matt Purcell, was talking about crippling shame after confessing teenage masturbation. John Dehlin gave what I thought was a pretty good summary of how the church uses shame to lock its members into a full-nelson of religious devotion: If you’re feeling guilty and te...
