Re: 'Do you think I could ever be happy outside of the church?'

There seemed to be a lot of things done back in those days that kids/people thought were funny at the expense of the unsuspecting. I never cared for that type of "humor". You wouldn't make a good Mason either. That trick is also part of a masonic initiation. Instead of a tree, they make you walk a ...

Re: 'Do you think I could ever be happy outside of the church?'

As fair and equitable as this solution sounds, I doubt anyone in jfro's wife's position would go for it. The problem with it is that the other person is more concerned about what God thinks of them. Surely there will be hell to pay for even thinking you could just take a vacation from the pressure ...

Re: New Apologetic Movie: Witnesses

And I believe that the story about the sand in the box is one that apologists say is from an antagonistic source and can't be trusted, which as a believer you go "oh yeah it's an anti-Mormon trying to undercut Joseph Smith" and walk away. I took this picture at the church history museum. This is th...

Re: What do you believe about it now?

I have wondered if the prophets really do believe? I think Nelson actually believes he is very special and that God, though not actually speaking, is giving him impressions. I'm a prophet, so random things that pop into my head MUST therefore be prophesy. I don't think Monson believed anything like...

Re: Dating the First Vision

Hagoth did you listen to Steven Harper's segments with Rick Bennett and Gospel Tangents? I have them downloaded to listen to next time I work, but Dan Vogel picked it apart pretty good on Facebook... Harper works very hard to find anything that could be evidence of an 1820 revival and changes a lot...

Re: Dating the First Vision

In one of Oliver Cowdery's letters to W. W. Phelps he mentions Joseph's age when he first saw the angel, and then in a later letter he corrects himself and states that Joseph told him to backdate the event to a year earlier. Other things, like the timing of the revival sermons also support the idea ...

Re: Fiona Givens and BYU

I think the dont talk about because there could be many heavily mothers, because it is highly likely that god is a polygamist. Can you imagine one woman producing that many spirit children? I am sure that spirit children would not be produced like physical children. We have no concept of what spiri...

Re: New Apologetic Movie: Witnesses

"Because God will kill you (or me)" is a very convenient and all-purpose excuse. Why do you have to marry my teenage daughter? "Because God will kill me if I don't." I think they should keep using it. Why can't I see the churches financial records? "Because God will kill you." "Brother Hagoth, it's ...

Re: New Apologetic Movie: Witnesses

Do you think the 3 witnesses saw anything at all? Or did JS just lead them in a group hypnosis session? I should have said "saw." No I don't think they saw anything, except in a mental/revelatory sense, as Jfro described. Whitmer pretty much admitted that. Think about what they said outside of the ...

Re: New Apologetic Movie: Witnesses

Why didn't they testify of how awesome the magick rock in the hat was? The church never included rock talk as "testimony," even though Whitmer and Harris talked about it quite a bit. It was when Joseph stopped using the rock that Whitmer concluded that he had become a fallen prophet. To the witness...

Re: New Apologetic Movie: Witnesses

The biggest question about the witnesses is what did they really see? David Whitmer later claimed that the angel"had no appearance or shape, " and was quoted as saying "Have you never had impressions? Then you had impressions as the Quaker when the spirit moves, or as a good Methodist in giving a ha...

Re: Fiona Givens and BYU

My wife told me about this. If the Maxwell Institute has turned on her it could be an interesting insight into a potential wave apologist in-fighting. We've already seen a little bit of this with Daniel Petersen and John Gee. When I attended a fireside with Fiona the thing that jumped out at me was ...

Re: New Apologetic Movie: Witnesses

I wonder if it will skip the part where Martin Harris spoke to God in the form of a deer. Or that he was also one of Gladden Bishop's three witnesses who bore testimony that he also had the gold plates and Urim & Thummim. Or about the angel he saw when he followed the shakers, or the time he spent ...

Re: Garments and Temple recommend interview

Then after the question, the interviewer must read you a big paragraph on how the church wants you to wear them. This is one of the weirdest things in the temple recommend. They don't give you a card to read about chastity or Word of Wisdom, or sustaining The Brethren, so why do you have to read a ...

Maybe you can convince him to sign up on NOM and do an all exclusive AMA with us? That would be fun. Probably not. I only see him a couple of times a year. If I knew him better I would probably feel more comfortable asking him. He did a podcast interview with Lindsay Hansen Park on the Sunstone pod...

Re: I know the guy who saved Mark Hoffman's life.

That section of the documentary brought up so many comments on Twitter. Twitter, just like any social media platform, is just a big opinion and gossip session, but it does give a feel for how people think about things. Is the guy still TBM? Did he say anything about the negative comments about comm...
