Re: Were we all traumatized by being Mormon?

I was in therapy, supposedly for sexual abuse as a child, but me and my LDS FS counselor were spending 90% of our discussion talking about the church. I began to see a pattern over the previous 15 or so years. I would get suicidal and get into counseling and we would work on the issues left from the...

Re: Where was the City of Enoch?

Yup, I heard in seminary that the City of Enoch was where the Gulf of Mexico is now and that it will be returned to the same spot. Now, considering g that global warming is going to melt all the polar ice and raise sea level by about 6 feet, then on top of that God will plop the City of Enoch down a...

Re: The Q-15 has a safety net. How would it work in a crisis?

That necessity to all be in agreement is more likely to stop some needed update than it is to prevent one person leading the rest of them astray, or maybe better put it will just help them stay astray in all the traditions of men that they embrace. The 1978 revelation to give blacks priesthood & tem...

Re: "Opportunity to receive personal revelation"

If by personal revelation, he means God telling you that all of General conference is totally made up, and nothing you seriously need to worry about, then you might get it. Just pray and ask if any of it actually comes from God, and when you get that warm fuzzy sense of relief, know that it is your ...

Re: Super Mormons

Why would the church be against using a sperm donor? It's not the sperm that's the problem, it's the method of extracting it. God cannot condone the activation of the little factory for something as selfish a couple wanting to have a family and care for a child. The church has no problem with the w...

Re: What did Jesus have to say about...

Me too. I see Jesus as one who whether God, man, or both, chose to live among the poor and give his best to them. Whether he claimed the messiahship for himself, or had that foisted upon him by his followers, he doesn't seem to have intentionally exploited the poor. He didn't say, "Give your money ...

Re: YW General President's Misleading Faith Promoting Experience of Her Toddler Grandson's Death

I have thought about it that way too but for her to share this story so often in public is such a risk. Does she not know that there is a public record of the circumstances of her grandson's death?! There seems to be a tradition of just accepting what is said in a formal church setting as truth. It...

Re: Help declining a sacrament meeting talk

I would love to speak in sacrament meeting. If you would like me to speak, I will only be able to speak on the following topics: 1) Polygamy and polyandry 2) Brigham Young’s Adam God Doctrine 3) How the church protects sexual predators 4) How the WoW teaches we should drink beer 5) How Donald Trump...

Re: Describing the "Mormon" God.

The thing about Mormon God that has always bothered me is the atonement. I just don’t like the idea that a father would punish the oldest brother for the sins of all the younger kids. It is even worse than Protestant God or Catholic God who says, see, there is no need for any punishment because I my...

Re: Help declining a sacrament meeting talk

Often when they ask a couple to give a talk, the wife being asked to talk is conditional on her husband talking also. You didn’t say if she was asked to speak also, but if she was, it might help to clarify that she is willing to give a talk and please don’t dis-invite her because the holy priesthood...

Re: Is there value in clergy/penitent privilege?

CES does not think there is any value to clergy/penitent privilege. They now require all new BYU employees to sign away those rights, allowing the bishop to tell BYU anything he is told during confession as part of his/her yearly evaluation. But of course. The unrighteousness of BYU professors is m...

Re: Racist Incident at Duke/BYU Volleyball Game

They could start with renaming BYU. That would be a start, but wouldn’t solve the problem. They would have to work much harder than just disowning Randy Botts to get rid of the doctrine about anyone of African descent was less valiant in the pre-existence. They would have to admit they were racist ...

Re: Is there value in clergy/penitent privilege?

The more I think about it, I think that clergy-penitent privilege may be actively harmful to society. As in your last example, people could use confession as a way to ease the burden of guilt rather than as a step to being a better person or fixing a harm done. In the case in Arizona, I'm guessing ...

Re: The Mormon church releases ANOTHER statement going after the AP

I saw this over on reddit. The church is trying to block the testimony of the ward clerk. The judge has ruled that the clerk is not a clergy member, thus clergy-penitent privilege does not apply. The church is appealing. https://www.myheraldreview.com/news/bisbee/lds-lawyers-aim-to-block-testimony-...

Re: Is there value in clergy/penitent privilege?

For sins that have no victim, or the victim is God or the church, I think it is fine for the church to be granting forgiveness. But the church cannot forgive on behalf of the victim, and what about restitution? So, I think there is something basically wrong with the whole thing about confessing to c...

Russian state media is predicting the US will begin a civil war over the Trump search warrant. The Republican Crime Syndicate has declared war against the FBI and Justice Department. What is your opinion? It would be a very short civil war. I kind of like the plan that I heard proposed on the radio...

Re: Advice on parenting college-age student and drinking

I recently read an article that said that if the person’s first experience with alcohol was getting drunk before their brain was mature, that it permanently changes their brain leaving them craving alcohol. That is the first step to alcoholism. Their first drinking experience can cause alcoholism. A...

Edited to add that I marked that I have no plans to resign, because even if my sweetheart goes first, he asked me not to because that would wipe out our sealing. I promised him that I wouldn’t and I won’t.
