What happened to the old NOM board?

This is for encouragement, ideas, and support for people going through a faith transition no matter where you hope to end up. This is also the place to laugh, cry, and love together.

What happened to the old NOM board?

Post by Galileo »

Sorry if this has been discussed... but I just came back after about 8 years of NOM-board inactivity, and see people talking about the "old" NOM board and how this is the new one. What was the deal with the old one? Why and when did it end? And who brought it back and when?

Just curious.

It began to fall apart in mid 2016 when avatars started to disappear and new people signed up but weren't getting confirmation emails. At some point the credit card the hosting was getting billed to had expired so it went down temporarily. Thayne had been absent for awhile and popped in to say he was fixing things and planning a software update. Then one day it was suddenly offline and hasn't been back since.

Many of us drifted over to reddit and/or the mormon discussions board for awhile. A NOM reddit was set up but that didn't really catch on. With a big NOM void leaving a gapping hole in the internet, many of us couldn't quite overcome our addictions and the withdrawal symptoms were too rough to handle. In October, Hagoth and I started to twist Corsair's arm and convinced him he should set up a new board. He accepted the challenge and during a break between General Conference sessions, the two of them made mad passionate love resulting in Captain Salty the administrator being born!

I'm not sure what else is relevant to explain other than to say thanks to those two fine gentlemen. Without their talents, charisma, and credit cards NOM wouldn't exist as we have it back today!

A sincere thanks to those guys! And a sincere thanks to everyone that found there way here and continuously share their disaffected, cold, hard hearted, heartfelt stories and life experience living as some kind of mormon.

Also as a reminder for lurkers and newbies wishing to sign up: the confirmation email setting was turned off to prevent (limit) spammers, Russian hackers, and evil pornographers. All new sign ups have to be approved by Captain Salty who tries to check daily. Once approved you can log right in.

Wait, what? If this were Wikipedia I would be forced to add "citation needed".

I still wonder if Thayne died or something. And I wish there was some way to rescue the old site even if in read-only mode so we could restore the valuable stories and resources that were there.

And, absolutely, I am grateful for this new board - even if it did suck me back in.

Well, since this has come up, I can finally tell the truth about what really happened. Back in 2016, I was just beginning my faith crisis. I had found the old NOM from a post Rock Waterman made on Pure Mormonism (a brief phase while I was trying to salvage my testimony). Exmo Reddit was a little too wild for me at the time, but NOM was more respectful and slower paced. I had signed up but not posted anything, mostly lurking. I was teetering back and forth between belief and unbelief. I finally made the leap and made a few posts. Pretty soon after that, the site crashed.

I was seriously convinced for a short period of time that God had destroyed the site because I had posted things mildly critical of the church.

Anyway, I came to my senses and found the resurrected NOM. So sorry guys, it was my wickedness that destroyed the old site. Now you know. I hope you can forgive me.

Yeah, about that citation? Your wiki page will need to cite “became the HTP in ~ 2020”

This is hilarious and true all at the same time.

I still have thoughts scrolling in my brain trying to connect reasons things happen and attribute them to unworthiness.

It’s a part of Mormonism for sure, but also shared amongst many people in all forms of religious belief.

I have really fond feelings abut the old NOM board because it's where I first began to awaken and all the meaningful and great relationships I was able to make. I'm super happy that Corsair and everyone resurrected NOM. It's a great blessing. Seriously. It's good to be back. A huge THANK YOU!

After the original site died, there was a Facebook group for a hot minute. I only know of a maybe a half dozen who went from the old board to the FB group. Didn't have much activity. Once the new site was created, I don't think anything has happened on that group.

ETA: I looked up that Facebook group and it still exists. There have been a dozen or two posts between 2017 and 2019, but nothing since 2019.

I remember the Dark Times. When we just couldn't get back on the old board, tried to reddit it for a while, and then Captain Salty saved the day. Like everyone else, I sure wish I had a record of my changing views about the church, but so glad that NOM 2.0 returned.

Thanks to all involved!

8-) 8-) 8-) Thanks so much to all the wonderful people who revived this board and who have kept it going. I think we have some of the most talented, funniest, most insightful writers in the entire Nomie-verse. Thank you, everyone. -- Wndr.

Those responsible for this new iteration of the NOM board are due our support and thanks, even if we do not stand up when they enter the room.

Yes, many thanks to those of you responsible for bringing NOM back.

I never had any hard feelings toward Thayne when the old Board died - he never owed us anything. We should be grateful for what he did, I personally didn't like some of the complaining I saw at the time.

For myself, complaining was mostly due to grieving the loss of my documented “faith crisis journal”. Sort of like losing a journal in a house fire and never having the ability to go back and read my thoughts. I guess I could have saved my thoughts and posts or PDF’d them but I just thought everything on the internet never went away.

All these years later and I think I’ve processed that loss like any other and realized I’ve still got a lot of great wisdom from all ya’ll from our interactions and wonderful conversations over the years.

Honestly, I never would have imagined NOM 2.0 would have continued this long. In October of 2023 we will have hit 7 years!

And that’s plenty to be proud about.

And he did tell someone that the board was hacked, and he was trying to fix that, I think then something else went wrong, and he really did not have the computer skills to get it back up and running, and no one he contacted could either, so at the point he declared NOM unfixable and threw in the towel. So, he tried to keep it going, but was unable to.
