From the MormonLeaks McConkie Papers series found at:https://mormonleaks.io/wiki/index.php?t ... kie_PapersEvolution has its own church. Darwin, who how holds a position of influence in the
courts of hell, is its patron saint. He has been canonized again and again and again by his
disciples in the temples of learning. As he writhes and twists in burning agony on the
spits of Sheol, he yet plots and plans other ways and means to deny the goodness of God
and the atonement of his Son.

I didn't realize BRM had so much respect for Mr. Darwin:

Re: McConkie Vs. Darwin
McConkie's humble willingness to let God be the judge of who goes to Hell, betrays the very problem that got his predecessors booted out of Ohio, Missouri and Illinois.
I can't imagine why nobody wanted these people around.

Re: McConkie Vs. Darwin
But it wasn't just McConkie vs. Darwin. It was McConkie vs. Catholics, and Lutherans, and Mormons and anyone not named McConkie or Fielding Smith. An institute teacher who worked with his son shared that the McConkie family would go home every Sunday and talk about all the false doctrine they heard that day. The teacher then added that we can only do that with Bruce's book.
Back to the original topic. McConkie did so much damage with his crazy opposition to evolution. I think it was in one of his Messiah books that he basically blames biologists for the lack of revelation about the creation. On this topic, McConkie and his father-in-law and now his descendants are off the rails on this topic.
Re: McConkie Vs. Darwin
Bruce was a bully.
He felt "revelation" was superior to any science, and in his mind, he would turn off thinking in favor of what he deemed revelation. And if what he considered revelation was contradicted by science, he would look at 1 + 1 = 3 and call it TRUE.
Truly a closed mind.

Re: McConkie Vs. Darwin
I think the "Christ and Adam" piece shows that McConkie had thin skin.

God is Love. God is Truth. The greatest problem with organized religion is that the organization becomes god, rather than a means of serving God.

And the general membership take their que from their prominent leaders. I think many members in the early church were quite vocal with their "gentile" neighbors about their ultimate fate if they failed to join the Mormons.
Even in rural idaho in the 60's my neighbor, who was a singularity as a non-member, was told she would go to Hell if she didn't join the church.
The McConkie approach did much more damage than it did good, but I'm sure it gave him an ego-stroking sense of superiority. An unflattering trait in a supposed servant of God.
