The following quote should be placed on the BOM, BofA, and maybe even D&C.

"The story, all names, characters, and incidents portrayed in this production are fictitious. No identification with actual persons (living or deceased), places, buildings, and products is intended or should be inferred."

Discuss amongst yourselves.

Agree for the BoM and the BoA. I would also add JS-M and the Book of Moses, and at least the first few books of the Old Testament. I would reword it for the D&C, however, because Joe Smith actually existed.

Isn't it interesting that this kind of disclaimer is often used, and it's an acknowledgement that even when something is completely fictitious, there can be parallels with reality, but this seems to be lost on some defenders of the faith, so we get explanations like:
"The BoM says Ishmael was buried in Nahom, and there's a place in southern Arabia when they discovered the inscription of a man belonging to the tribe of NHM which shares three letters with 'Nahom', but even though experts cannot tell us exactly how NHM would have been pronounced, we now know irrefutably that the BoM is true."
(At best I think this is cherry picking, but I think it is also the false equivalence fallacy.)

Confirmation bias can really suck.

Thanks for bringing this up,
Zack

Would I like to see this? Yes.

But it's not reasonable, a similar disclaimer would need to be applied to the Bible. While the Bible contains real people and some factual records and the BoM does not, there need to be a level of universal disclaimers for all Christian texts.

I don't know enough about other faiths (islam, buddism, etc) to comment on those.

Maybe if the the text itself doesnt have a disclaimer, everyone should be provided with a "Guide to the Bible/BoM" that contains such a disclaimer.
Reading can severely damage your ignorance.

Some lady got up yesterday and yapped on and on about the BOM being a guideline for our day and how wonderful it would have been to live in the nephite cities. It was a hoot to liken it to a desire to live with Fred Flintstone.

Zach, good to see you here!

Yeah, Korihor it should apply to the Bible as well. Alas, confirmation bias does suck!

It will only appear on those books when and if Kirton and McKonkie decides it is in the financial interest of the institution.

Nephites! Meet the Nephites!
They're a modern scripture family.
From the town of Lehi.
It's a place no where in history.

Let's ride on a tapir down the street.
Translate, causes scholars to retreat.

When you're with the Nephites
Have a scripture-reading-good time.
A boring church time.
But not a gay old time.

Sheesh! Now I'm picturing a muscle-bound Arnold Friburg style "Nephite"... Zooming around Zarahemla in his Fred Flinstone car.

You've got a real talent Corsair. Between this and the extra verses you wrote to Follow the Prophet, I think you have proved you are ready for a new assignment. You should write Salt Lake and offer to update the hymnbook.

That's probably not safe once I get going on a song. I have to find just the right rhetoric to insert the politically incorrect dialectic. My children were appalled when I worked in the verbatim phrase "anagram for ginger" into some ridiculous song they were singing. They also have ceased to enjoy the song "Come Come, Ye Saints" because I once sang it:

Come, come, ye saints
No toilet paper here
But with grass
Wipe your....

I didn't have to finish that stanza since their brains naturally finished the line and coerced them all into ponderizing potty language in an LDS hymn.
