Polygamy

I saw this article today. Not sure if its politically motivated or not. But this is one of my arguments against polygamy have ever been "Ordained of God" Its not the kind, loving, caring for widows crap I was sold growing up...

TL;DR: Polygamy destabilizes societies its creates a huge disparity between wealthy and poor men that often leads to civil war. If the most wealthy take multiple wives the bottom 30% (or so) of men never get any wife at all and will be causing trouble to change the situation.

Once the gospel spreads across South Sudan, they will learn the true order of polygamy and become loving and civil people. /S

There was a book that I read several years ago, which analyzed culture in respect to what something did to help the culture survive. One example is that eating pork is just not practical in a desert climate, however on a tropical island, where the pigs thrived a bit too well it was necessary to have yearly feasts where they pigged out on pig. So, where raising pigs was too costly in the amount of water and feed they took, but still yummy, there had to be a religious prohibition, or people would destroy the environment raising pigs.

So, then they got to poligamy. Polygamy is a form of birth control. Get one man married to 50 women, and he may have 50 children, but 49 other men have none, and those 49 men are quite happy to go to war in hopes of stealing a bride from the enemy. So, they bring back 10 wives. But at least 25 of the men get killed. Then, the enemy tribe wants revenge and another 20 men get killed, but another 10 women are stollen by the enemy tribe. So, where land expansion was limited and population needed to be controlled, polygamy was a way of limiting population size. When the number of people reached a critical level, it was time to have another war, with the near by tribe that was competing for limited resources. So, the war was over resources, but it was also over brides.

So, when LDS scripture says polygamy is to build up a population, it is proof that God didn't write that. No, polygamy works to limit population growth because it makes each woman less likely to have as many children as she can carry the pregnancy and still survive.

Another form of birth control the book analyzed was religious restrictions on women eating animal protein. Limit the protein intake of women, and you get malnourished babies who die. See, population limited because so many babies die and weak women are more likely to die in childbirth, so each woman born has fewer surviving children.
