Silence by Martin Scorcese

I realize that we aren't trying to list movies that are about belief and Mormonism, but this was a deeply interesting movie about belief, unbelief, culture, Christianity, and having revelations from God. It's rated R, but there is no swearing, sex, or nudity in this movie. There is physical cruelty, but no real violence. I would recommend Silence to any believer who wants their beliefs both challenged and affirmed. Scorcese has filmed the "Dark Night of the Soul" that James Fowler describes in his Stages of Faith. You will legitimately feel the Spirit through the first third of the movie where these priests first get to Japanese congregations who have not had a spiritual leader for some time.

As befitting a movie with a title like "Silence", there is no music in this film. The end credits feature only forest and nature sounds. It's unnerving, but really drives home the theme of silence from the story. The production values and acting are fantastic and the Japanese subtitled throughout. The two priests actually speak Portuguese, but the actors use English.

Also, Adam Driver plays one of the priests in this movie. Silence came out in 2017 a few months before Star Wars: The Last Jedi. It's clear that Adam Driver must have been put on a gruelling exercise and bulking regimen in between these films.

PS I have yet to see Citizen Kane.

Citizen Kane was out of circulation for many years because this veiled semi-biography of William Randolph Hearst angered the newspaper magnate. I wonder if Orson Wells had left out the name Rosebud whether Hearst would have restrained his abuse of power.
