If there was a reason to suspect the entire Hill Cumorah story was fictional, it makes sense to not compound a false belief by affirming its location, even if it a decision was made to keep mum on its fictionality.
Good faith does not require evidence, but it also does not turn a blind eye to that evidence. Otherwise, it becomes misplaced faith.
