Nelson Talk - Chat Thread

This is for encouragement, ideas, and support for people going through a faith transition no matter where you hope to end up. This is also the place to laugh, cry, and love together.

Lets hope not. But he is president of the Q12, so maybe that is what she meant?

I didn't hear anything new, earth-shaking or inspiring in either talk. I think maybe this is Nelson's way of easing into the main red chair - he's busy being the Prophet in Waiting.

I just now realized that's his title - you're right - that's probably what she meant. I'll tell my blood pressure to go back down now.

We need to encourage some of the lurkers (we had at least 10 at one time during the session) to join in the discussion!

Talk to you all tomorrow!

Talks like sister nelsons were just a knife in the heart when I was TBM and in an abusive marriage. You hear stuff like that over and over again. "just be righteous and you will have a happy marriage." But in reality, no amount of righteousness on your part can override the agency of your spouse. So my heart breaks for all of the TBMs who heard this and are now thinking "I just have to be more righteous and things will change."

Nelson? He sure likes to talk about how awesome he is. I bet we will get to hear more of that when he finally occupies the throne. I am curious to see if they will change "revelation" to "inspiration." Guess we will see tomorrow.

Hey SG / Your comments are top notch. FYI, prez of the BIG 12 has not traditionally used title of prez. The use tonight is stretching the worshipfulness of his Egoness Lord Nelson. Just a thought...

I went to the Mariott Centre to hear Mr Nelson speak. Beforehand, the jumbotron displayed tweets with the hashtag #LDSDevo (I think it was), invariably full of praise for the event and Mr Nelson. I was somewhat surprised to hear Mrs Nelson deliver an address too; hers was "Aunt Wendy's [sic] Four [un]Truths for a Happy Marriage" or something like that. She had harsh words to say about pornography as I recall. I noticed she kept referring to her hypothetical married couple as "husband and wife", which could be interpreted as homophobic. Other than that, nothing particularly interesting.

Mr Nelson continued his "true millennials" theme, railed against the world a bit, and compared Mormonism favourably to science, saying that the good effects of Mormonism and the bad effects of rejecting it are "predictable, dependable, and repeatable." In the case of the bad effects of rejecting Mormonism, he ad-libbed a "regrettable" at the end. (I could tell, because I was in a position where I could read the teleprompter.) He also praised "prophets" (e.g. himself) heftily, and enumerated his career as it connected to his predecessors. He didn't descend too far into "stay in the boat" rhetoric, which surprised me a bit, but that did feature. He still insists that Jesus' coming is imminent.

In conclusion, it was banal, boring, and bog-standard.

I'm not sure I've ever felt a need to watch a devotional, even as a TBM. #boring

Thanks for the summary! Much easier to just read the summaries and memorable quotes than to have to watch the entire thing.

Is it just me or does it seem like the apostle who is likely to be the next prophet tends emphasize how great the current prophet is? It's like ETB's 14 Fundamentals of Following a Prophet talk. If I had been an adult at the time of ETB's talk, in which he emphasized that the Prophet should be followed no matter what he says, I think I would have been real nervous about the direction of the church when ETB became prophet in light of his mad conspiracy ravings against communism, evolution, civil rights, and women working outside of the home. Fortunately, it turned out that ETB was too old make huge changes when he became prophet.

Okay, now that I've read all the comments...I'm really glad I didn't watch this. These talks feel like an emotional and spiritual beating.

Apparently, we need the prophets to say things, and Nelson to clarify that what they said was revelation. Two-stage prophecy. We are in the age of redundancy - backup servers, etc.
Yup, Elder Nelson has established himself as the mouthpiece of the mouthpiece of God.

OMG...The Holy Ghost needs to be involved in your intimacy? Seriously? They just can't help themselves from being total idiots. Now they are preaching spiritual threesoms.. Mormon leaders are obsessed with and want control of every aspect of members lives..
