If you aren't doing conference, what are you doing?

This is for encouragement, ideas, and support for people going through a faith transition no matter where you hope to end up. This is also the place to laugh, cry, and love together.

If you aren't doing conference, what are you doing?

Post by glass shelf »

Five years ago, I was listening to conference on Saturday while working on a project with my husband. I had no idea it would the the last conference I heard before my shelf crashed. I do remember thinking that a lot of the advice whoever was talking was giving was absolutely awful and the last thing that I'd want for my kids.

Fast forward to today. If I didn't still read exmo stuff on the web, I literally wouldn't have even remembered it was conference weekend. Today, I was involved with a small group of parents from my kids' school in putting on our first annual Color Run. It was fantastic. 500 people from our school community hanging out on a Sunday afternoon enjoying the gorgeous weather. Community's what you make it, and my kids are lucky to have a good one. (I realize conference is easier to ignore because I live in IN and not the Morridor. No one who's not Mormon cares the tiniest bit about it here.)

So, what are you doing?

Beach. But I had to conference earlier with the DH. And the new recommend question about keeping the sabbath holy is probably gonna come up later. I tried to forestall it by saying we all get to decide for ourselves how to keep it holy for ourselves but I don’t think that’s gonna fly after Nelson’s changes. I’m so sick of sitting on this fence.

We went and hung out with a few exmo’s and exmo families for a picnic this afternoon. First time meeting most of them - all great to just hang out and visit with.

We didn't listen to any of it. We were going to go to the beach, but one of the kids got sick. Instead, husband tore apart the garage and I am helping kids with halloween costumes. Way better than conference, not quite as good as the beach.

I'm jealous of everyone who lives close enough to the beach for that to be an option. :D

Yesterday went to the history museum for a new Lego's exhibit, DD volunteered all day at a pollinator fest at our local botanic garden, so met her there (new Muslim friend!), finished the day out with Astronomy festival - looked at Saturn, Jupiter, the Hubble came by, moon - perfect weather.

Today, UU service that was amazing.

Grading papers, decided to listen to a little of conf, should not have gone there :(... getting some tea, and putting on some good music now...

Perhaps will go and listen to some Alan Watts...

Went to Church in the morning.

After Church I did a bit if cleanup of a vehicle, etc. from a trip last weekend. It is 2nd Saturday after all.

Visited a friend/neighbor and enjoyed a mild barley drink.

Eating pizza with the youngest now.

Lovely, lovely day. Didn't hear one word of the Conditional Love Conference™ which took place somewhere too near...

jfro18 wrote: Sun Oct 06, 2019 5:26 pm The changes are pretty small, but for the most part are all about adding control...

#5 Old: Do you live the law of chastity?

#5 New: The Lord has said that all things are to be “done in cleanliness” before him (Doctrine and Covenants 42:41). Do you strive for moral cleanliness in your thoughts and behavior? Do you obey the law of chastity?

So that adds thought police to your actual actions... awesome.

#7 Old: Do you support, affiliate with, or agree with any group or individual whose teachings or practices are contrary to or oppose those accepted by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints?

#7 New: Do you support or promote any teachings, practices or doctrine contrary to those of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints?

This is probably a good change for those in mixed faith marriages so that you don't have to talk about family members that found out the church is a fraud...but not that much different really.

#8 Old: Do you strive to keep the covenants you have made, to attend your sacrament and other meetings, and to keep your life in harmony with the laws and commandments of the gospel?

#8 New: Do you strive to keep the Sabbath day holy, both at home and at church; attend your meetings; prepare for and worthily partake of the sacrament; and live your life in harmony with the laws and commandments of the gospel?

That's to make sure that you're not taking advantage of 2 hour church and thinking you can do something that isn't for the church because we can't have that.

#11 Old: Do your keep the Word of Wisdom?

#11 New: Do you understand and obey the Word of Wisdom?

This is likely for those who think that iced coffee is OK since it is OK under the word of wisdom... or those evil 'cino drinks.

#13 Old: If you have previously received your temple endowment: 1) Do you keep the covenants that you made in the temple? 2) Do you wear the garment both night and day as instructed in the endowment and in accordance with the covenant you made in the temple?

#13 New: Do you keep the covenants that you made in the temple, including wearing the temple garment as instructed in the endowment?

They're not giving up that kind of control and obedience anytime soon. :x

Anyone who expected they'd relax on the WoW was kidding themselves... this is pretty much the same thing except they've tweaked a few words and added a few extra elements of control. YEA FOR MODERN DAY REVELATION, Y'ALL!

Today, I visited NOM and Slack (two Slack social groups I'm part of), spent a lot of time learning languages, mostly Duolingo and Memrise, and walked to Walmart and back.

Yesterday, ditto NOM, Slack, and Duolingo, plus my sister came to town and we had a great visit!

Paint the sun room.

Ride the tram and have a pint at Oktoberfest. Posted my first photo of me drinking, a reply to a photo of my uncle's wife drinking her Stein. Not sure what my family will think of it...

I spent the weekend at a casino with a group of women celebrating multiple milestone birthdays in the group "50". Lots of loud laughter, gambling, mimosas, axe throwing, and shots of fireball.

I came away from that feeling more love than I ever did at any RS conference or event, ever.

Went out to eat at a buffet with my daughter after General Conference. Suppose I was breaking the law of not eating on Sunday, just like the authorities with their catered buffet in between sessions. In that regard I was upholding the law of do as I do, not as I say.

During the sessions, I enjoyed reading the excellent threads created by MoPag along with watching.
Good faith does not require evidence, but it also does not turn a blind eye to that evidence. Otherwise, it becomes misplaced faith.

Saturday was with DS helping at a local half marathon with the Amatuer Radio club. Good day to be out. The race was thankfully uneventful.

Sunday was making breakfast for the fam: eggs Benedict and the afternoon at the barn helping DW get ready for a show.

Sunday fly fished a nearby stream in the afternoon. Looked like a lot of folks were ditching conference here in the morcor.
