Re: Ordinary Mormon Trauma

Yes - Service is token service, for things that are "socially acceptable". Having a relative who is mentally handicapped, autistic, or otherwise disabled? NOT socially acceptable, so no service (or party invites, or church activities) for you or your family. Going through a divorce because your "pro...

Re: Problems interacting with normal people as a family...

Half of my family are alcoholic Catholics, so I don't drink because trouble runs in my blood. People understand "family history" issues, and it is no big deal, can be good to have a designated driver and all that. Many people have dietary restrictions and preferences, it's not a big deal. Can be a g...

Re: Your brain on Mormonism

There are parallels between Mormonism and other cult groups. It is valuable to understand manipulation techniques, "elevation emotion", pros and cons of tribalism. There is value coming to understand any group in depth, it all circles back around to understanding humans and understanding ourselves.

Re: Thank God for Secularism

Any belief system can turn brutal, athiests have blood on their hands as do religious groups. Looking through list of most secular countries, some I would love to live in, others not so much. Herd mentality is a strange thing. The best remedy is traveling, experiencing multiple cultures and belief s...

Re: I have a question.

At the Last Supper, when Jesus washed the Apostles feet, John 13:4 states that he "laid aside his garments and girt himself with a towel" with which he dried his disciples' feet after washing them. My question is: If you were the artist creating a serious painting of that scene, would you depict th...

Re: More than one way to Marry

As sung by Frank Sinatra- Love and marriage, love and marriage, Go together like a horse and carriage. This I tell ya, brother, you can't have one without the other. Love and marriage, love and marriage, It's an institute you can't disparage. Ask the local gentry and they will say it's elementary. ...

Re: More than one way to Marry

Here's an off-the-wall question. Is it possible to get a temple divorce and remain civilly married? Keep the marriage but divorce the third member (the church) from it? You CAN get a civil divorce but remain temple-married. I guess resignation or excommunication would do the same thing but I'm just...

Re: What are the problems with the word Mormon

I’m sure we have hashed this before, but how does the world view Mormonism? I’m sure this is part of the decision to stop calling each other Mormons. However, is the name Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints gathering a stigma as well? Whatever it is that set it all off... I'm just glad ever...

Re: Rise of the "Nones"

As for what I think actually awaits us after death? I suspect it is a whole lot of nothing because I can't see how any other options would work, though I've never been there so I won't be too surprised if I'm wrong. Length contraction, time dilation, special relativity - some strange games can be p...

Re: Rise of the "Nones"

That makes a lot of sense. I think there is a similar "rise of the nones" going on in politics where people are independent, but they almost always vote with one party or the other because their values are still similar to one group, but they dislike the group itself. I think doing volunteer work a...

... I asked why he thought the relationship was better and all he could come up with was “either of us can get up and leave at anytime....” Sometimes we do things out of obligation, or responsibility, and I agree it's good to be dependable, honorable. Other things we do voluntarily- if you had free...

More than one way to Marry

Reading through old posts, remembering one thing that saved my marriage and sanity, was re-defining what "marriage" was, seeing DH as a roommate, as an old friend, and no longer defining them in my mind as a "husband". I took off wedding ring, found a new way to approach and think through the whole ...

Re: Why go to a "Membership Council?"

I could be wrong about this, but I thought at some point in the past the Church had formulated guidelines to protect the rights of those undergoing the destructive procedure of excommunication. It turns out that this was not a hallucination, there actually was a formal procedure to protect the accu...

Re: Rise of the "Nones"

I identify as "spiritual but not affiliated". It allows me to escape the stigma of athiest, escape labels of fence-sitting ignorant agnostic (not true labels, but it feels like that is the opinion of many), escape any labels of religious groups, and not offend any religious groups as being 'anti-god...

Re: Who’s next on the excommunication list?

I struggle with understanding why people do not just remove their name. For most people, I think you're right. Very few of us will ever gain enough visibility to be called into the Inquisition of Love. For those who do attain that status I think there is something valuable in forcing the church to ...

Polygamy to gender roles are reason for things like: https://wallethub.com/edu/best-and-worst-states-for-women-equality/5835 Utah and Idaho dead last by a long shot for women's rights from everything from income gap, leadership gap, education gap, to no political representation. Re: Who’s next on the excommunication list?

I struggle with understanding why people do not just remove their name. (This is what I did, fairly painless process). For all the complaining, do those who stay think some part of it is true? which part do they think is true? Is it only possible to change culture from within the organization and no...

Re: Did Netasha Helfer-Parker get Exed?

For anyone from Kansas, or just spread the word... I spent a weekend with her at a Mormon Stories retreat (with TBM husband at the time). My then-TBM husband could not handle anyone at MS except Natasha, that was the one person there he was impressed with and therefore a lifesaver for me. Hubbie is ...
